Apprenticeship Week

The Warrington Business School has been embracing the spirit of Sir Alan Sugar during National Apprenticeship Week 2010 (1-5 February 2010) with apprentices sharing their newfound skills in a rather unusual role reversal.

Hairdressing students were taught how to unblock a sink and wire a plug, whilst trainee plumbers discovered how to give the perfect shampoo and set, embracing the apprenticeship spirit of attaining new, sometimes unexpected skills!

The week’s activity came to a climax on Friday 5 February with a visit from Warrington MP Helen Jones, who visited the college as part of the government’s “Back to the Floor” initiative, which has seen cabinet members and top management across the UK taking part in activities to celebrate the skills of apprentices.  She spent time with the apprentices, even being shown how to wire a plug by The Warrington Business School's electrical students.

National Apprenticeship Week is a national campaign organised by the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) to celebrate the talents and skills of apprentices. It provides an opportunity for employers, providers and all those involved with apprenticeship programmes come together to celebrate the value of apprenticeships.

The Warrington Business School has added reason to celebrate its young apprentices, with the news that 22 year old Gareth Williams who attends classes one day a week has been awarded the title of Apprentice of the Year for the North West in the joinery category.  Gareth will pick up his award and cheque on 24th Feb in Doncaster and will then be put forward for the national finals taking place later in the year.

Helen Jones MP comments: “ I was very impressed by the quality of work being done at The Warrington Business School and by the apprentices themselves. They demonstrate that the vast majority of young people are hard working and want to do well.

“The number of apprenticeships has expanded enormously and there are now 500 apprentices at The Warrington Business School.  I hope more young people will see apprenticeships as a valuable route to a job and high-level skills."
